Negotiation English: Don’t Reveal Your Budget Too Early

For non-native professionals, strong executive English is not about using longer or more complicated words. It is about communicating clearly, protecting your position, and helping the conversation move towards a decision.

In a negotiation, one common mistake is revealing your maximum budget too early.

Before discussing your limit, make sure both sides understand the scope, priorities, delivery requirements, and constraints.

Common Mistake

Less effective: Our maximum budget is £100,000.

Stronger: Before discussing figures, could we confirm the scope and delivery requirements?

The second version does not avoid the question. It simply puts the conversation in the right order.

If you reveal your maximum budget before confirming what is actually required, you may give away important negotiating room. By clarifying the scope first, you can discuss price in relation to specific services, deadlines, and priorities.

Useful Questions

Instead of immediately stating your budget, try questions such as:

  • What are your top priorities?
  • Which elements are essential?
  • How flexible is the implementation schedule?
  • What needs to be included in the first phase?
  • Are there any areas where the scope could be adjusted?

These questions help you gather information before making a financial commitment.

In a Real Conversation

A: What is your budget?

B: “Before discussing figures, could we confirm the full scope?”

A: Certainly.

B: “Which services are essential for the first phase?”

A: The implementation and training are the main priorities.

B: “That helps. Once we have those requirements confirmed, we can look at the most realistic budget.”

This sounds professional without being evasive. You acknowledge the budget question while keeping control of the discussion.

Practise

Say the stronger sentence aloud three times:

Before discussing figures, could we confirm the scope and delivery requirements?

Then change one part:

  • the project
  • the deadline
  • the services
  • the priorities

Finally, use the same structure for a real negotiation or budget discussion from your own work.

Quick Check

Rewrite:

We cannot pay more than £50,000.

A stronger version:

Before discussing price, could we confirm the required scope and priorities?

Final Point

Good negotiation English is often about when you say something, not just what you say.

You do not need to avoid the price question. Make sure you have enough information before you answer it.
